May 23, 2014 – Practitioners win 2014 Ashden Awards
London, UK, May 22, 2014: The 2014 Ashden Awards and conference came to a close at a prestigious ceremony in which 14 trailblazing organizations, including two members of the Energy Access Practitioner Network, received awards for their innovative work delivering sustainable energy solutions around the world.
Off-Grid Electric, based in Tanzania, received an award in the international category for innovative financing solutions – the company created a delivery model that uses a mobile money platform to sell solar power and also provides strong ongoing customer service.
Myanmar-based Proximity Designs also won the Ashden Energy for Agriculture award for introducing and promoting sustainable agriculture through their innovative foot-operated treadle pumps, drip irrigation, off-grid solar lighting and other initiatives. Drawing water from wells for agricultural purposes is back-breaking, time-consuming work for rural farmers. Combined with water-saving drip irrigation technology, foot-operated treadle pumps that draw up water from wells can dramatically increase agricultural yields and incomes.
