Enabling Mini-Grid Development in Rural India
Using a comprehensive life-cycle cost analysis, this study finds that mini-grids are more economical than incumbent energy services available to households without central grid connections in India. Through a qualitative analysis, the study identifies the threat of central grid extension as the gateway barrier preventing mini-grid development in India. The issues associated with the gateway barrier have common elements with the so-called holdup problem as identified in the economics of organizations.

Decentralized Renewable Hybrid Mini-Grids for Sustainable Electrification of the Off-Grid Coastal Areas of Bangladesh
The study investigates the hybrid renewable mini-grid approach as a possible solution for universal electricity access in Bangladesh. Using the Hybrid Optimisation of Multiple Energy Resources (HOMER) simulation model, the study, covering the whole coastal region of Bangladesh, shows that it is possible to offer a much better quality electricity for 12 h to 18 h a day for as low as USD 0.29–USD 0.31/kWh. Hybrid models suggested in this study can be replicated along the coastal belt and remote islands to obtain maximum diffusion of this technology and hence universal electrification.
Rural Electricity Access in South Asia: Is Grid Extension the Remedy? A Critical Review
Instead of considering each of the modes of electrification in a stand-alone manner and perceiving them as mutually exclusive or competing with one another, as usually occurs in the policy sphere, off-grid electrification can actually be considered as a complementary mode and should ideally be integrated with grid expansion to serve the bigger cause of ensuring universal and sustainable rural electrification in South Asia.
