From the Network – January 2018

Dear Members and Friends,

Happy New Year and welcome to the January edition of the Practitioner Network newsletter. 2018 is shaping to be a busy and exciting year for the Network and the sector as a whole. Here is a sneak preview.

Earlier this month, the UN Foundation co-organized a two-day conference on Energy for Displaced People in Berlin, Germany, where we helped mobilize 120 participants from governments, the UN system, humanitarian agencies and the private sector to develop the key elements of a Global Plan of Action to be launched later this year. The plan aims to raise ambition for greater and cleaner energy access in humanitarian settings. We are proud to be contributing to this new initiative. For more information about the event’s outcome, please check out this link.

Following on the heels of this newsletter, we will be hosting our first webinar of the year on February 13, on the topic of Mobilizing Commercial Finance to Achieve Universal Energy Access Across Sub-Saharan Africa. Together with speakers from Shell Foundation, Catalyst Off-Grid Advisors and GOGLA, we will be discussing some new groundbreaking research on what it will take – in terms of financing – to scale-up the off-grid sector to serve the 125 million households in Africa that still lack access to modern energy services.

Elsewhere, our Annual Survey is nearing completion with publication expected in the next few months. We are particularly excited about the results of this latest survey as they contain a lot of interesting insights into the gender dimensions of our collective work.

Other notable milestones to look out for this year include the India Energy Access Summit, Sustainable Energy Forum for East Africa, SEforALL Forum and High Level Political Forum (which will focus on SDG 7 this year).

As usual in our newsletter, you will also find some of the biggest Practitioner Network member news and other useful resources. On behalf of the entire Practitioner Network team, thank you for reading and we look forward to continuing our partnership with you throughout 2018.
