Funding Opportunities – May 2018
PFAN has launched a call for proposals for climate and clean energy projects and businesses in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Selected projects will receive no-cost coaching by professional consultants and, once they are investment-ready, benefit from PFAN’s Investment Facilitation services. Entrepreneurs looking to initiate or scale-up clean energy or other climate change-related projects and seeking an investment of up to $50 million are invited to apply. This is an open-ended call for proposals without a deadline.
The coaching support provided through the PFAN Project Development and Financing Initiative for Climate & Clean Energy in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia will help entrepreneurs develop and refine a financially viable and socially and environmentally sustainable business plan, to be employed in subsequent investor outreach. After completing the coaching phase, the projects will receive assistance in terms of financial mobilisation, deal making facilitation and other follow-up support.
All submissions are to be made online through PFAN’s Climate-Invest Management system. Applications submitted via email cannot be considered. PFAN is hosted by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in collaboration with the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP). Cold chains have the potential to significantly improve livelihoods for smallholder farmers. However, modern cold chain technology is often out of reach in off-grid areas in developing markets due its cost, a lack of access to electricity, and the wide variety of uncoordinated stakeholders in the broader cold chain.
The Global LEAP Off-Grid Cold Chain Challenge (OGCCC) is an international competition to identify and promote the most energy-efficient, sustainable and cost-effective technologies that can meet the cold storage requirements for fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy products in the following countries: Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
The Challenge was developed in partnership with Energy 4 Impact and support from the UK Department for International Development through the Ideas to Impact Programme to stimulate off-grid cold chain refrigeration for farmers and small traders, enabling better commercialization of agricultural produce.
By supporting the development of innovative cold chain solutions that run off clean energy, the Off-Grid Cold Chain Challenge will catalyze technology innovation and market development.
Innovation prizes will be awarded to products that demonstrate innovation in energy efficiency, off-grid appropriateness, scalability and feasibility of deployment. A category will be eliminated if there is not more than one nominee and prize money distributed between the other categories
