Use GIS to find your Mini-grid site

By: GIZ

The Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP) has supported Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing (FMPWH) in developing a GIS-based search engine, the “Mini-grid Finder”. The Mini-grid Finder is an online based tool that was built primarily to help mini-grid developers in identifying viable sites for off-grid solar mini-grids in Nigeria.

Five Nigerian states are covered (Cross River, Niger, Sokoto, Plateau and Ogun). For these five states any user with an internet access is able to filter potentially attractive sites according to different search options (e.g. load, population, distance from national grid). Users can then extract their search results into Excel or Google Earth for further processing.

The search engine is based on datasets that are composed of secondary GIS data, which were validated by NESP’s state partners (by means of a desk study). It is thus recommended to validate any information in the field. The tool can best serve as a starting point and to lower project development costs.
