Universal energy access as a development imperative in addressing climate change

The United Nations Foundation Energy Access side event on December 12 at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 20th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 20), which took place from December 1 – 12 showcased innovative approaches to reach the ambitious but achievable goal of universal energy access by 2030. It brought together policy makers, practitioners, researchers, investors, private sector, and experts working to deliver decentralized energy services and clean cooking solutions.
The panel of speakers included high-level leaders on energy access and climate change from different sectors and geographical regions, including Simon Trace, CEO, Practical Action; Arthur Laurent, Microsol; Paul Winkel, Power Mundo, Bahijjahtu Abubakar, National Coordinator, Renewable Energy Programme, Federal Ministry of Environment Nigeria. The event was co-organized by the UN Foundation’s Energy Access Practitioner Network, Practical Action, Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves, Women Environmental Programme Nigeria and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
